(When Comfort Blocks Progress) How to Stop Self-Sabotage and Start Moving Forward
Sep 10, 2025Why do we self-sabotage, even when we know exactly what to do?
Why do we say we want freedom, or success, or peace, and then act in direct opposition to those desires?
That’s the question that came up in a recent session with a client I’ll call Carly—and the insights we uncovered are ones I think many of us need to hear.
When Logic Fails and Fear Takes Over
Carly and I have been working together on a powerful investing strategy designed to help her build passive income through consistent action every few months. She was doing great—until she wasn’t.
After receiving a $9,000 payout from an old investment, Carly hit pause. She didn’t reinvest. She didn’t pay down leverage to move faster. Instead, she just sat on the cash.
And here’s the kicker: she knew what to do. She wanted to do it. But she just… didn’t.
That’s when I knew we weren’t dealing with a strategy issue—we were dealing with a subconscious block.
The Real Reason Behind the Pause
It took some digging (and the right question at the right time), but eventually Carly admitted something powerful:
“I hate my job. It’s been horrible the past few months.”
That was the lightbulb moment. For the first time, she acknowledged how close she was to quitting—and subconsciously, she was holding onto that $9K as a safety net in case she needed to walk away.
That’s self-sabotage.
Not the dramatic kind we associate with reckless behavior. This was subtle. Logical on the surface. But driven by avoidance and unprocessed fear underneath.
What Is Self-Sabotage, Really?
A lot of us think of self-sabotage as some extreme behavior. But more often, it shows up in quieter ways:
-
Not sending the email.
-
Not making the investment.
-
Holding onto money without a plan.
-
Saying we’ll start tomorrow… again.
These small choices feel harmless, but they add up. They erode momentum. They keep us stuck. And often, they’re a form of emotional avoidance.
"Saving without purpose often signals emotional avoidance."

Why You Might Be Avoiding Progress
Let’s be clear: procrastination isn’t always laziness. Most of the time, it’s protection.
You're not making the move because:
-
You’re afraid to fail.
-
You’re afraid to succeed and not be able to maintain it.
-
You’re uncertain, overwhelmed, or exhausted.
-
You’re protecting your ego, your identity, or your peace.
That’s what was happening with Carly. She wasn’t lazy—she was at her limit. And until she named that truth, she couldn’t take the next step.
How to Interrupt the Cycle of Self-Sabotage
If this feels familiar, here are a few tools to help you break the pattern:
1. Ask: What am I avoiding?
Journal it. Say it out loud. Dig into the discomfort.
“What am I avoiding by not hiring a coach? Starting my business? Investing?”
2. Name the fear behind the behavior
Maybe it’s fear of failure. Maybe it’s fear of success. Maybe it’s shame or uncertainty.
3. Take one micro-action
Don’t leap. Step. Make the smallest possible move that proves you’re capable. Confidence is built through action.
4. Say it out loud
Tell someone. Post about it. Publicly commit to your next step. Accountability is powerful.
5. Align action with values
What do you actually care about? What do you want to create? Let that guide your decisions—not fear.
It’s Not Just Business—It’s You
Whether you’re building a business, managing a team, investing in your future, or trying to stay afloat in a job you’ve outgrown, your emotional landscape matters.
Self-sabotage isn’t a character flaw. It’s a signal.
A message from your subconscious that something needs attention.
When we ignore that message, we lose momentum. But when we pay attention, when we listen, we gain clarity—and we take back our power.
So here's your invitation: stop judging yourself. Start getting curious.
And then?
Take one bold, imperfect step forward.
